Data as of October 5, 2026 · citations issued Oct 5, 2025 to Oct 5, 2026
Known as the Laboratory Standard, this rule applies to laboratory use of hazardous chemicals on a laboratory scale, where multiple chemicals and procedures are used and procedures are not part of a production process. Employers must develop and carry out a written chemical hygiene plan, designate a chemical hygiene officer, keep exposures below permissible limits, provide employee information and training, offer medical consultation and examinations after possible overexposures, and maintain fume hoods and other protective equipment. It replaces most other health standards for covered labs.
What the standard requires

- Train laboratory employees on chemical hazards and protective measures
- Provide medical consultation after potential overexposures
- Ensure fume hoods and other protective equipment function properly
Hazards it addresses
- Toxic chemical exposure
- Chemical burns and splashes
- Fires and reactions from incompatible chemicals
